Greendale Farm Shop & Cafe

Greendale Farm Shop is fast becoming a shopping destination, with its recent expansion and new signs, this often overlooked farm shop is the go-to destination for all things local.

On the A3052 Sidmouth Road, about a mile from Crealy's Adventure Park, is the ever growing Greendale Farm Shop with over 50 years experience and knowledge in farming with fishing being added to their repitoire in 1967, their passion for all things land and sea are shown in abundance in the shop.

Greendale Farm Shop loves using local suppliers and you will find local companies such as Eat the Smoke, South Devon Chilli Farm, Hawkridge cheeses, Tom's Pies, Exeter Brewery and many many more, each with a display that enhances the product and draws you in.

Even before you enter the shop you can pick up a brace of pheasants merrily hanging outside (depending on the time of year).

As well as all the local goodies you can fill your trolley up with, they also boast a fresh fish counter with a huge variety of local caught fish from their own boats including a tank of live lobsteres and crab, ready for picking; the staff on the fish counter will always greet you with a smile and are very knowledgeable about all things fishy.

Greendales has been very clever in using the space to also have a fish and chip counter, offering a very tasty selection of fried and grilled fish and shellfish for you to eat in the on-site cafe or in the comfort of your own home - which is very useful to us locals due to limited takeaway food options nearby and only one option for delivery. A bonus for those who need gluten free, is that on the first Wednesday of the month is gluten free fish and chip day - and the batter is amazing.

On entering you are greeted by an array of fresh fruit and veg, many from local farms and as affordable as the supermarkets (no tourist trap price tags here), a very well stocked deli counter offering everything from local cheeses to home made sausages rolls.

The butchers counter is fantastic, offering great products at an affordable price without compromising on quality. You can pick up everything from venison, homemade sausages,  a great variety of all cuts of meats to the star of show which in my opinion is their homemade steak burgers.

A burger?! You may think that out of all the meat, why would I choose a burger...but these bad boys are the best homemade burgers you can treat a decent bun to. Meaty, well seasoned and they don't shrink when you cook them.

If you're not sure what you fancy or how to cook stuff, the very knowledgeable and friendly butchers are on hand to advise you.

With the recent expansion adding a large amount of floor space to the shop, this new space is a bit of a work in progress at the moment with a bit of a mish mash of things but I'm confident that this will become a great space in time. It has, however, enabled them to expand their Free From range for those who this is important to.

With most farm shops adding a place to eat, the cafe here is definitely not an after thought offering reasonably priced homemade food and drink, ranging from a great quality breakfasts, a homely Sunday lunch to a slice of very tempting cake and delicious coffee to break your healthy new years eating plan.

The End Bit
Would I recommend? Yes without a doubt!

It's the farm shop to visit; it has come so far in the last few years and I think it will continue to grow without losing its ethos. Take the family, have lunch, do your weekly shop, feed the chickens and wander around the other animals including Ozzy the Ostrich. Everyone will leave with something and I'm sure you'd continue to come back and support this farm shop or tell your friends to.
